About Me

Hello. My name is Daniel Smith, and I'm a grad student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I grew up at my home in Florida. On the internet I usually go by AzureIce, or just Azure for short. (I used to go by SqueakMac). If you couldn't tell already, I love computers. I have been working with them since I was very little. I picked up HTML and web design when I was about 11, and got into programming with VB6 shortly after that. I now work with an assortment of languages, with my favorites including VB6, C, PHP, and some Python. I also love to work with hardware, microcontrollers, and networking. .

I have always loved programming. My first language was Visual Basic 6. I learned programming at a computer camp (hey don't laugh - it was fun!), but I continued to use it after that, and learned as much as I could from large programming reference books and from great programming websites on the internet, such as Planet Source Code. From there I began to branch into other languages, like C++ and PHP. Writing code has since become not only something that I've become skilled at, but something I enjoy a lot. I attended a few other computer camps when I was in middle school, and then took a Visual Basic 6 class my freshmen year of high school, but I spent most of the time working on my own projects. My biggest project was D++.

I enjoy video games too. I tend to play PC games, but I do enjoy Super Smash Bros, Guitar Hero, Mario Kart and other such games with friends. My favorite games have included all of the Unreal series games, Deus Ex, Star Craft, the Half Life series, several Star Wars games, Portal, Crysis, and Ikaruga for the Dreamcast. I love building gaming rigs to play these games. I am also into playing my Nintendo DS Lite, especially during class.

I did a lot of work with technology in high school, and on the side I repaired computers for people. Customers who heard of me by word of mouth contacted me and set up an appointment with me to drive to their house and work on their computer. The problems I worked with were mostly spyware and virus removal, networking, operating system installs, and even basic computer training. This was not only fun for me, but it was a nice amount of extra money on the side. And I got a lot of troubleshooting experience from solving various types of problems.

Right now, I'm studying Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. I love it here, and I love learning about the passions that I've had since I was a kid as well as finding new ones. My interests in programming have faded, and I now work mostly with hardware, microcontrollers, RFID, antennas, RF engineering and some audio engineering.

About PageMac

PageMac started as just my little website on the net, around 1999. 'Page' came from 'web page', because at the time the site was about web design, and 'Mac', which was also in my alias, 'SqueakMac', came from Macintosh. On the page there were some games, script examples, HTML tutorials, small programs I made, etc. It was just a simple personal website where I posted things that amused me. Eventually, unsatisfied with Angelfire, I moved to Tripod and expanded into web design and programming. The site grew a little bit.

In 2003, I started a web server on a FreeBSD machine at my house. I began to move the entire website over to the new PageMac server. Because of this move, I was able to add some new pages and features, including PHP. A phpBB2 forum was added, the [root] and other sub pages came into existance, and I was able to host websites. For several years, the forum was a very active community. During this time PageMac was focused on programming, development, and especially D++. Eventually, sometime around 2005, my friend Sam offered to host PageMac on his server in a real datacenter with real bandwidth. He still hosts me today!

Today, PageMac is still essentially just my personal website. There have been times when I attempted to open it up to more of a public service website with code examples, tutorials, etc. In the end, my interests have shifted from software and programming to engineering and hardware.
